TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE

There have been a lot of riftfarers arriving lately. It seems like there have been more arriving than usual. So many different kinds of people from different kinds of worlds with stories to tell and experiences to give.

A little game has appeared on the shellphone network in hopes of getting to know just a little more about these otherworlders. You might find it on your shellphone as you’re scrolling through one day.

Tell the world two truths and one lie about yourself. And let others try and decipher which of the three is your lie. If they can guess right, perhaps you’ve been able to make a new acquaintance. Or in the least learn more about someone from another walk of life.

For what purpose do you need to grow several hundred yalms tall?

Ah, before I can answer that, I have to know if that's what you think is a lie or not.

[ Damn. He was hoping Cid would answer - even if only coyly - so he could make a more educated guess. ]

Your second and third statements are so unbelievable to the common man that they must be true. I choose the first statement as your lie.

[Gonna have to do better to pull that one, Emet!]

Then how unfortunate, that actually happened. Briefly and on a drunken dare, but it happened.

How disappointing. Now you're only half as interesting as I'd hoped you'd be.

[ :( ]

Only half? Suppose that's better than none.

Care to try again?

[ There is a pause while he's thinking. Between controlling the weather and growing in size, neither are unlikely to a mage. ]

I suppose I shall choose 'growing in size' in that case.

Luck is not on your side it seems, for that is also true.

[ smh ]

I am now thoroughly disappointed.

What, you don't think either of the two truths are interesting?

Any man can ride a chocobo backwards given practice. Any mage can alter their physical presence. Controlling the weather, however, begs questions of how one does so without adversely affecting the star's natural climate patterns and is something I would have liked to discuss.

Assuming the would-be weather mage has even thought that far ahead, that is.

I suppose that would make for an interesting conversation when you put it like that. The best I can do is influence the clouds a bit to create lightning storms, but I don't use it that often.

[Because unlike just a normal thunderstorm, lightning storms would be just that—predominantly lightning.]

However I am trying to learn more magic on making it rain as I've had come across too many situations where that would have been useful. I doubt it would have such drastic implications as you mentioned.

Have some insight you care to share?

[Though he notes that "mortal" bit.]

I'll grant you that a one-off, localised adjustment to precipitation will not have adverse effects to the overall climate. The issue is that once you begin to normalise doing so year after year.

Constantly adjusting the weather such that it is perfect for you and you alone will eventually affect other regions. Then THEY will suffer and ask for help - and so on and so forth, your troubles accumulating until you are right back where you were in the first place and you realise you may as well have not meddled in the first place.

But of course, the one who began the practice will be dead by then.

And here I was just thinking of using it to create an advantage in battle or only when absolutely necessary to deal with adverse weather.

Sounds as if you've had the unpleasant experience of dealing with such a situation.

[Because that is very. Specific.]

Call it rather a mistake my people learnt from long ago.

Do not meddle with the weather unless you're prepared to shoulder the responsibility of caring for your star's climate for eternity.

I'll keep that in mind. I'm not really one to want to mess with the balance of life and nature unless it needs saving.
